Evolution of chlorophyll biosynthesis - the challenge to survive photooxidation

Article Abstract:

Higher plants convert carbon dioxide and water into carbohydrates in the presence of sunlight through the use of green colored pigments called chlorophylls. In plants and other photosynthetically active organisms, different enzymes are used to catalyze the reaction under different environmental conditions. The reason for the different enzyme systems is to protect themselves from photooxidation that results from the interaction of chlorophylls and their intermediates with other macromolecules in the biosynthetic pathway after light absorption.
