Surgery of the thoracic aorta

Article Abstract:

Surgery is the best treatment for aortic aneurysms that are at risk of rupturing. An aortic aneurysm occurs when the aorta begins to enlarge, which often causes the layers of the aorta to separate. This process is called aortic dissection and the subsequent weakening of the outer wall can cause the aorta to rupture. For this reason, surgery is often used to replace the aorta with a Dacron graft. Cylindrical objects called stents can also be placed inside the aorta to stabilize it. Aortic aneurysms are best diagnosed by MRI scans but transesophageal echocardiograpy and aortography are also useful.
