Greening Wal-Mart

Article Abstract:

William McDonough Architects designed the Wal-Mart Store Inc branch in Lawrence, TX, in collaboration with BSW Architects based on ecological considerations. The one story-facility was designed with higher ceilings for greater conversion flexibility should the store decide to move out of the sight later. The wall coursing was designed in such a way as to allow removal and replacement with windows. An alternative cooling system using R134A, a less harmful hydrofluorocarbon was installed. Moreover, the roof was featured with six experimental skylights to introduce daylight and minimize electric lighting.

Viva la luz

Article Abstract:

The North American headquarters of Ecuadorian investment bank JPBT Advisors was designed by Carlos Zapata Design Studio. Zapata created a poetic and relaxed atmosphere unusual for the bank by using geometriic concepts to define the office zones. Slanted glass walls made from combined sand-blasted and clear glass divide the private offices from the main corridor. The overall effect is dramatic yet basically open and relaxed.

Creative outlet

Article Abstract:

The firm of Ned Forrest Architect designed the interior space for Smith and Hawken's two retail outlets, in Berkeley, CA and Mill Valley, CA. A horticultural theme dominates both stores, with rough pallet-grade clothing displays and a faded patina on the walls and floor, evoking a prairie ethic that is consistent with the retailer's image.
