Quiet compassion: a comforting refuge for terminally ill AIDS patients

Article Abstract:

The compassionate design of the Bailey-Boushay House, a care home for SeattleAIDS patients was achieved through extensive research on requirements of these patients and community reaction to the presence of these patients. The three-story stucco building houses a day-care center for non-resident patients on the ground floor and a 35 single rooms separated into four neighborhoods by nurses stations on the second and third levels. The works of 30 artists were built into the workspaces and living areas. The designers maintained medically sterile areas by using stain-resistant materials with contemporary designs.

Unconventional wisdom

Article Abstract:

The Greater Columbus Convention Center in Columbus, OH, was designed by Richard Trott and Partners Architects Inc and Eisenman Architects with a facade suggesting small buildings that scales down the center's large mass. The unexpected differentiated roof planes help integrate a very large building into its surroundings in a manner which could not have been achieved using a neo-classic design. The warm pastel exterior color scheme is also used inside of the low-profile building to emphasize a sense of warmth provided by a human scale.

Regional renaissance

Article Abstract:

The architecture firm NBBJ has organized its 500 employees into collegial studios of 20 to 30 people, allowing designers considerable autonomy and promoting competition between groups. NBBJ architects and designers incorporate regional influences in their work, as shown in such projects as Washington's Sun Mountain Resort. Other recent work includes the The Centrum at the University of Arizona, St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church in North Carolina and Seattle's Market Place Tower.
