Healthcare Design Research Alliance

Article Abstract:

Reno, NV-based interior designer Mary Jean Thompson proposed the creation of the Healthcare Design Alliance, now the Healthcare Research Design Alliance (HRDA), in 1992 to give manufacturers of healthcare design products a chance to collaborate on coordinated color palettes for healthcare products and interior finishes. The HRDA holds Provider Forums thrice a year and Specifier Forums, where specifiers can share their problems with HRDA members, to coincide with annual design industry events. At present, the HRDA counts nine major manufacturers among its members.

Who cares? Taking health care design a step further

Article Abstract:

Health facility designers have more patient-centered designs which stress vitality and dignity of the human being. It is the job of designers to relate with the experiences of each patient and to make his hospital experience as positive as possible. Health facilities design should create order as well as provide time and privacy for patients. Hence, designers should create a balance between personalized attention for thehospital staff and privacy for the patient by reducing the distances between patients and locating control stations strategically.

Soft neutrals: creating a warm envelope for radiation patients

Article Abstract:

The design firm Anshen and Allen executed the layout and interiors of the radiation therapy unit of the California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco based on the need to create an open and peaceful ambiance. This was achieved using soft, indirect lighting to heighten the low-ceiling areas. Interiors were made of light oak wood, white, peach and soft blue for the walls which were then set off with warmer-tone lamps. The basement-like effect was neutralized with the artwork and bright halogen accent lights along the walls.
