Jungle fever

Article Abstract:

The Banana Republic store in North Michigan Ave, Chicago, IL, was designed by Robert A.M. Stern Architects. The facade of the two-storey building has lead-coated copper reminding the shopper of prefabricated metal structures in jungle colonies. The 14,360-sq-ft has a domineering suspended staircase in the middle covered by a large skylight that entices customers to go up to the second floor. The second floor, on the other hand, is inspired by a plantation villa with alcoves displaying the clothing being sold.

Green created spaces which were interesting, comfortable and pleasing by following medieval town square-inspired designs. A mix of spatial character is achieved through the clever arrangement of conference rooms and private cubicles. Volume and material are used to dissipate natural light throughout the space.
