Is corporate philanthropy fair to shareholders?

Article Abstract:

Some question whether corporate philanthropy is fair to shareholders. According to Ben Cohen, chairman, Ben & Jerry's Homemade, Inc., business has a responsibility to make great products, create economic rewards for shareholders and employees and recognize its role in society. According to Albert J. Dunlap, CEO, Sunbeam Corp., a business exists only to make money and must do everything fiducial, legal and moral to achieve that end. People who earn money can and should be using some of it in charitable causes they choose.

A stoneware jug or crock that has extensive decorations commands high prices in auctions as it is one favorite item among collectors. Most stoneware jugs and crocks that are decorated with lions, zebras, patriotic emblems and people are steeply priced. Origin and age, as well as glaze, decoration and shape, are also important considerations for collectors.

'Ghost legs': fast-break friendships for an American in Africa

An American Rotary Scholar in Botswana recounted his experiences in using basketball to make friends with his African classmates. Due to its physical nature and need for teamwork, basketball was described as a game which could transform strangers into friends within an hour.
