Effects of age and hypertension on adrenoceptor-sensitivity evaluated with CD25 and QT QS2

Article Abstract:

Examination of patients with hypertension and normal tension reveals the variation of chronotropic dose (CD25) with age in all subjects, while the age-dependence of the ratio of electrical systole (QT) to electromechanical systole (QS2) occurs only in normotensive subjects. Patients above 60 years show no change in beta-adrenoceptor sensitivity, while hypertensives under 60 years exhibit lower sensitivity than normotensives below 60 years. Further analyses reveal the independence of the QT QS2 ratio over beta adrenergic sensitivity.

We/us: in defense of the Queen's English

Article Abstract:

Queen Elizabeth II decided to apply the more common usage of the conjunction 'than' by making it a preposition in an annual speech to her subjects. She used the phrase 'than us' rather 'than we' when she made a comparison between the level of wisdom found in adults and children. The Clinton scandal shed light on the abuse of the words 'shameless' and 'shameful.' The former refers to a person who bears no shame; the latter modifies an actions that is filled with shame.

The Eames House: powers of two

Article Abstract:

The Eames House was designed and constructed by Charles and Ray Eames in the 1950s. The original plan was for a single-story structure to be built of standard elements. Charles changed his mind at the last minute and opted for a two-story house with a separate studio which used the same number of available materials. The mixture of furnishings which included folk art, found objects, plants and Eames furniture was courtesy of Ray.
