Article Abstract:

The Lighting Research Center (LRC) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with laboratories in Watervliet, NY, has completed hundreds of research work on lighting in its 10 years of existence. All aspects of lighting are studied from the technical aspects to its decorative uses. The LRC is also committed to the provision of lighting education to various students and professionals. It provides Outreach Education courses which include a satellite videoconferencing program.

Lighting curved walls

Article Abstract:

The two basic methods of lighting curved walls are grazing and wall washing. To decide which is best, features such as whether the wall is convex or concave, its texture and ability to absorb light must be considered. Grazing involves placing lights close to the wall at the ceiling or floor and lends itself best to smooth walls or those whose texture can be emphasised. Wall washing is when a light is directed at the wall and is best for rougher textures.

Lighting case study: a warehouse store takes an energy-conscious approach to lighting

Article Abstract:

The lighting system at the Linens 'n' Things retail store in Patchogue, NY, was conceptualized by the Demonstration and Evaluation of Lighting Technologies and Applications team of the Lighting Research Center. The design is based on energy efficiency, lower costs of operation and easier maintenance with a clean and attractive effect in merchandise presentation. The lighting system utilized affords good visibility and focus on the merchandise.
