The next wave

Article Abstract:

The design of Opus reflects the translation of water movement into architectural elements. The restaurant, which is located in the Water Garden in Santa Monica, CA, is surrounded by various ponds and fountains and the design serves to blend the facility with its environment. The wavy design elements are repeated intermittently from the canvas valet kiosk which heralds Opus' existence to the curved tree-lined pathway leading to the restaurant and the interior. The area's welcoming atmosphere results from the use of pearwood finishes and warm, soft hues.

Peep show

Article Abstract:

The design of Club USA in Times Square features blatant sexual displays that emphasize the area's seamy attractions. Nightclub owner Peter Gatien wanted to emphasize the liberated attitudes of the 1990s and designers Eric Goode and Serge Becker decided to incorporate elements which reflected thesexual aspects of nightclubs. Thus, spaces have been provided with designs and paraphernalia calculated to assault the senses such as a dim hallway with videobooths reminiscent of sex shops and a main bar with mock porn magazines and other similar elements.

Storm front

Article Abstract:

The architectural firm of Grinstein/Daniels designed the Typhoon restaurant, located at a municipal airport in Santa Monica, CA. The interior details reflect the themes of weather and aviation, while the overall shape of the restaurant resembles a control tower, providing panoramic views of the airport. The polished concrete floor contrasts with elegant cherry wood paneling and behind the bar there is a weather map made of mirror and art glass, backlit with neon, to lend an authentic meteorological touch.
