The right stuff

Article Abstract:

The UK textile industry is in decline. Only 500,000 were employed in the industry in 1992, compared to the 70's when it employed one million. The way to improve the industry is in education at design colleges. In particular this includes predicting trends quicker, training students at business management and increasing use of technology. Two Scottish design colleges, Gray's School of Art and Galashiels, have opposing approaches to design education. Gray's allows students to explore their own creative talents, whereas Galashiels emphasises cultivating technical skills.

Geoff Crook

Article Abstract:

Geoff Cook is the course director of MA design Studies at Central Saint Martins. He established the course himself in 1989, after persuading the accreditation board that the course did not need to be first taught as a undergraduate subject. The course allows professionals to question the future and definition of design. He dislikes the insecurity amongst designers caused by the recession because it inhibits their creativity.
