Typographic trends: you can't ignore them if you want your newspaper to be fashionable

Article Abstract:

Newspaper designers need to keep abreast of trends in graphic design if they want their newspapers to be fashionable. Many mainstream publications, such as the Chicago Tribune, have adopted unconventional spacing, sometimes using overlapping headlines or running the words together, to attract readers. Populist publications are also using a fusion of art, type and elements to create a cheesy exuberance, while some magazines aimed at younger readers use tight and obscure typography to attract attention.

Article Abstract:

Making content drive the design is the first key similarity among the publications named the World's Best Designed Newspapers in 1999 by the Society for News Design. Other insights gained from the 20th edition of the competition include creating a reason for existing, providing relevant information, interacting with the readership, taking risks, analyzing headlines and captions, designing the paper as a whole, giving photographs their due, practicing restraint and providing surprises to the readers.
