The victimization of Iraqi oil

Article Abstract:

Self-destructive internal policies and international power politics have deprived Iraq of its potential status as another Saudi Arabia, capable of producing 6-7 million barrels of oil per day (mb d). Periods of development in the 1950s and 1970s indicated vast promise, but even after UN sanctions are lifted the country could immediately produce no more than 2 mb d. Two years of work and $5 billion might restore its pre-war level of 3.3 mb d. US intransigence and Saddam Hussein's actions may prevent even that.
