No experiments, monumental disasters: why it took a thousand years to develop a socialized fishing industry in Iceland
Article Abstract:
The failure of Iceland's fisheries to develop before the 19th century even though the country had one of the world's best fish resources and enjoyed an enviable strategic location is due to both internal and external factors. The principal internal factor was the dominance of the landed class where labor was tied to the land and only permitted part-time work in fishing. The main external factor was represented by the Danes who economically isolated Iceland so that they could maintain their rule over the country.
