Serving the spirits across two seas: Vodou culture in New York and Haiti

Article Abstract:

The Voodoo religion varies from Haiti to New York, where the higher costs of America force practitioners to economize in their ceremonies. In Haiti, Voodoo is a full-fledged religion, with God ruling over spirit loas who interact in human affairs and have different personalities. Ceremonies have specific purposes and follow specific forms, with dances culminating in spirit possession.

A place called Haiti

Article Abstract:

Foreigners have difficulty visiting and understanding Haiti, giving in to fears of a land of chaos, poverty and violence. Haitian photographers fail to take advantage of foreign curiosity, and instead focus on the mundane in a documentary style. Foreign writers and photographers make records of fantastic and mysterious events which do not facilitate understanding.

Haiti: feeding the spirit

Article Abstract:

Haiti remains mysterious and contradictory, fulfilling written descriptions and negating them just as often. Haiti is undergoing political turmoil and social problems while the people still manage to feed their spirits. They endure poverty and violence while maintaining dreams, creativity and possession.
