A simple and reliable method for hybridization of homothallic wine strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to characterize a technique for homothallic wine yeast spore hybridization that supports hybrid selection and identification. The method accommodates a killer phenotype common in wine yeasts. The killer phenotype of all colonies isolated from each cross were analyzed for their ability to generate K+ CYH hybrids. Results indicated that the hybridization technique can be utilized to support genetic studies of natural wild yeast populations without crossing laboratory domesticated strains.

Correlation of functional instability and community dynamics in denitrifying dispersed-growth reactors

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to examine the community dynamics of two dispersed-growth denitrifying reactors during period of functional stability and instability. The results reveal a clear relationship between community dynamics and functional instability and the importance of diversity among nitrate-reducing populations within a denitrifying community.

Genetic instability of heterozygous, hybrid, natural wine yeasts

Article Abstract:

The genetic instability in natural wine yeasts and hybrids synthesized in the laboratory due to loss-of-heterozygosity (LOH) at the cyh2 locus were characterized and quantified. The LOH phenomenon is economically important if it causes sudden phenotype changes in industrial and pathogenic yeasts.
