Activin-A and FGF-2 mimic the inductive effects of anterior endoderm on terminal cardiac myogenesis in vitro

Article Abstract:

Activin-A and fibroblast growth factor-2 (FGF-2) are involved in the development of the heart in chick embryos. These compounds are both secreted by the anterior endoderm. Samples of developing heart tissue were taken from stage 6 chick embryos and cultured. The addition of activin-A and FGF-2 caused the tissue to begin contracting rhythmically and to produce cardiac alpha-actin mRNA.
