An engine for nucleosome remodeling

Article Abstract:

Several studies have been conducted to examine changes in the chromatin structure that involve the disruption or reformation of nucleosomes, termed chromatin remodeling complexes. Some of the studies indicated that at least the ISWI or Swi2 polypeptides comprise the engine of the remodeling machine, since chromatin remodeling activities containing these polypeptides were found to increase the accessibility of nucleosomal DNA to transcription factors or other DNA-binding proteins. However, findings also suggested that there are still several complexes involved and the biological roles of each have yet to be determined.

A SWI/SNF-related chromatin remodeling complex, E-RC1, is required for tissue-specific transcriptional regulation by EKLF in vitro

Article Abstract:

The function of the erythroid Kruppel-like factor (EKLF) was investigated in relation to stage-specific expression of the human beta-globin gene. EKLF deficiency in transgenic mice resulted to death caused by anemia during the developmental stage. Also, the function of the chromatin remodeling complexes such as the SWI/SNF contributed to the transcription of a tissue-specific regulated gene. Therefore, chromatin remodeling and transcriptional activity depended upon the coactivation of EKLF and the SWI/SNF complex, E-RC1.
