Combined approach for characterization of uncultivated magnetotactic bacteria from various aquatic environments

Article Abstract:

The diversity and succession of magnetotactic bacteria (MTB) populations in various microcosms from different aquatic habitats is investigated using a combination of a culture-independent 16S rRNA gene-based approach with extensive cultivation experiments. A novel magnetotactic rod (MHB-1) is detected in a sediment sample from a lake in northern Germany by fluorescence in situ hybridization.

First genome data uncultured upland soil cluster alpha methanotrophs provide further evidence for a close phylogenetic relationship to Methylocapsa acidiphila B2 and for high-affinity methanotrophy involving particulate methane mononxygenase

Article Abstract:

A study is conducted to gain the first insight into the genome of a USCalpha representative by using a metagenomic approach. Results reveal that both the pmo operon structure and the predicted secondary structure of deduced particulate methane monooxygenase are highly conserved among all methanotrophic bacteria.

Inactivation of the flagellin gene flaA in magnetospirillum gryphiswaldense results in nonmagnetotactic mutants lacking flagellar filaments

Article Abstract:

A method for knockout mutagenesis by homologous recombination in magnetospirillum gryphiswaldense is reported. Multiple flagellin genes are identified and it's targeted diruption eliminate flagella formation, motility and manetotaxis.
