Detection of Cryptosporidium oocysts in water: Effect of the number of samples and analytic replicates on test results

Article Abstract:

Forty two water samples were collected from one watershed during 20 storm events over 1 year, including duplicate or quadruplicate samples from 16 storm events and were processed by EPA method 1623 and immunofluorescent microscopy to detect Cryptosporidium oocysts in water. Results show that the numbers of both samples and analytic replicates affect the detection of Cryptosporidium oocysts in water.

Automated approach for ribosomal intergenic spacer analysis of microbial diversity and its application to freshwater bacterial communities

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted to develop a method of estimating microbial composition and diversity in freshwater lakes. Results indicate that automated ribosomal intergenic spacer analysis method coupled with information on 16s-23s ribosomal length heterogeneity rapidly and efficiently assess microbial communities in lakes.

Within- and between-lake variability in the composition of bacterioplankton communities: investigations using multiple spatial scales

Article Abstract:

Research discusses the epilimnetics of bacterial community composition by molecular fingerprinting and automated ribosomal intergenic spacer analysis. Results show that samples from 10-meter and 100-meter differed by 13 and 17%, whereas samples from between-lake scales differed by 75%, respectively.
