Determination of the respiration kinetics for mycelial pellets of Phanerochaete chrysosporium

Article Abstract:

The effect of oxygen concentration on the production of lignin peroxidases (LIP) and manganese peroxidases (MNP) in mycelial pellets of Phanerochaete chrysosporium was determined. Measurements of oxygen concentrations within the pellets showed a steep oxygen gradient with undetectable levels at a depth of < 0.4 mm. Based on the hypothesis that oxygen is the limiting factor in the production of LIP and MNP, a model was constructed that predicted respiration rates in different oxygen-ammended and pellet-sized cultures. Optimal rates were at small pellet size with hyperbaric oxygen. Under these conditions, high levels of LIP and MNP were produced.

Microbial degradation and humification of the lawn care pesticide 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid during the composting of yard trimmings

Article Abstract:

A study of the limit of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) mineralization, volatilization humic matter and sorption during the composting of yard trimming shows that at composting temperature of 60 degree centigrade, 50% of 14C labeled 2,4-D is mineralized, 23% is changed to humic acids and 19.5% is unextractable after composting. The 2,4-D and 2,4-D metabolites are sorbed and are not leachable during composting.

Succession of bacterial communities during early plant development: Transition from seed to root and effect of compost amendment

Article Abstract:

A study aimed to follow the bacterial community compositions of seed and subsequent root surfaces in the presence and absence of compost in the potting mix. The bacterial community compositions of potting mixes, seed and root surfaces sampled at three stages of plant growth were studied through general and newly developed Bacteroidetes-specific, PCR-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis methodologies.
