Research describing the territorial behavior of Round-tailed Manakins (Pipra chloromeros) is presented. In particular the dispersed lek breeding system of the male birds in southeastern Peru is investigated.

Display behavior and natural history of the Yellow-crowned Manakin (Heterocercus flavivertex: Pipridae)

Article Abstract:

Observations of the Yellow-crowned Manakin, Heterocercus flavivertex, from Venezuela reveal a polygynous breeding system, distinct nests and vocal and display behavior, and arthropods as major diet component. Their diet is also composed of a variety of fruits and invertebrates. The male flavivertex have a unique tail-shiver display and a repertoire of five distinct vocalizations. They defend their solitary territories by aggressive flight displays. The female H. flavivertex construct hanging cup nests composed of variety of plant fibres, small twigs, and wiry, grass-like fibres.
