Division-inhibition capacity of penicillin in Escherichia coli is growth-rate dependent

Article Abstract:

Beta-lactam derivatives such as benzylpenicillin inhibit bacterial division because they slow down the rate of peptidoglycan synthesis. Peptidoglycan is a necessary element in the formation of the FtsZ ring,a component of the cellular septum that determines the final size of the mature cell. Penicillin-binding protein is formed after the FtsZ ring is formed and its blocking by penicillin leads to filament-shaped instead of normal cells. In addition, the inhibitory effects of penicillin varies in different nutritional environments.

Bacteriophage T4 development depends on the physiology of its host Escherichia coli

Article Abstract:

The kinetic parameters of bacteriophage T4 growth and development were investigated in cultures of Escherichia coli. It was observed that all parameters changed monotonously with bacterial growth rate which, on the other hand, was influenced by nutritional conditions. The results also indicated that the rates of phage synthesis and assembly depend on the amount of protein-synthesizing system per cell. The burst size, however, was found to be determined by the time of lysis, which in turn, is dependent on cellular surface area.

Varying division planes of secondary constrictions in spheroidal Escherichia coli cells

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to analyze whether divisions can occur in planes alternative in three dimensions in successive divisions of Escherichia coli. A technique was designed to generate cells supporting secondary constrictions during growth in suspension. It utilized a combination of thymine limitation and mecillinam treatment. Results indicated that successive constrictions developed in planes tilted relative to each other.
