E2F and cell proliferation: a world turned upside down

Article Abstract:

The E2F transcription factors refer to the five groups of DP proteins that regulate genetic expression during the G1 phase by initiating cell cycle advance. The inactivation of E2F-1 gene in mice resulted in atrophied testicles during maturity. Hyperplasia and neoplasia of the tissues were also detected in aging mice. This results indicate the two diametrically opposite effects of E2F on genetic transcription. E2F induces transcription in the absence of the retinoblastoma protein (pRB) by forming a complex with DNA. The presence of pRB in the DNA-bound E2F represses transcription.

Local protein synthesis in the synapse is required for synaptic plasticity and has been implicated in learning and memory, however, direct evidence that behavioral training induces local protein synthesis is lacking. This protein synthesis is regulated by the RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC).

Polycomb, epigenomes, and control of cell identity

Article Abstract:

This article elucidates cell memory in genetic terms and suggests that cell identity is regulated by epigenetic functions, which maintain cell type-specific transcription integrity. The role of Polycomb group and trithorax group proteins in the development of memory system is discussed.
