FILAMENTOUS FLOWER (ital), a meristem and organ identity gene of Arabidopsis, encodes a protein with a zinc finger and HMG-related domains

Article Abstract:

FILAMENTOUS FLOWER (ital) is an organ and meristem identity gene in Arabidopsis thaliana. It encodes a protein with a zinc finger and HMG-related domains. The plant body has continuous formation of a structural unit unlike the animal one. A stem with a meristem at the top and lateral organs are always forming at the meristem. Mechanisms that control formation, maintenance and development of meristem are vital to understanding higher plants. Genetic analyses of filamentous flower (fil) (ital) mutants show FIL (ital) is necessary for growth and maintenance of floral meristems and inflorescence and of floral organs in Arabidopsis. FIL (ital) encodes a protein with an HMG box-like domain and a zinc finger. The domain is known to act as a transcription regulator. Cells at the abaxial side of the lateral organs regulate normal development of organs and maintain activity of meristems.
