Ferrihydrite-dependent growth of Sulfurospirillum deleyianum through electron transfer via sulfur cycling

Article Abstract:

Study was conducted to demonstrate that Sulfurospirillum deleyianum, which is known as a sulfur-reducing bacterium and is unable to reduce ferric iron directly, could be grown by reduction of ferrihydrite via sulfur cycling with no or with only little precipitation of iron sulfides. Study with ferrihydrite-containing agar, reveals that ferrihydrite when not in physical contact with bacteria was available as an electron acceptor because of the presence of soluble sulfur species that can act as electron shuttles between the electron donor and ferrihydrite.

The requirement of RpoN (sigma factor sigma(super 54)) in denitrification by Pseudomonas stutzeri is indirect and restricted to the reduction of nitrite and nitric oxide

Article Abstract:

The role of the sigma factor sigma (super 54) (RpoN) in the denitrification by Pseudomonas stutzeri has been studied by creating a clone and null mutant of the rpoN region. RpoN is involved in the expression of nitrogen-regulated genes and it is encoded by the rpoN gene. Results reveal that RpoN is not required in the denitrification by P. stutzeri but affects the expression levels and enzymatic activities of cytochrome cd1 nitrite reductase and nitric oxide reductase.

Growth yields in bacterial denitrification and nitrate ammonification

Article Abstract:

A comparative evaluation of growth yields with well described denitrifying and ammonifying bacteria in mineral media with simple substrates such as acetate, [H.sub.2], and formate under directly comparable conditions showed ATP synthesis in denitrification far lower than expected from the free energy changes and even lower than in nitrate ammonification.
