Ferrioxamine-mediated iron(III) utilization by Salmonella enterica

Article Abstract:

The mechanism of utilization of ferrioxamines as sole sources of iron by Salmonella enterica has been investigated. To this end, siderophore cross-feeding bioassays were performed to characterize the determinants involved in utilization of ferroxamines by Salmonella enterica serotype Typhimurium. The bacterial growth rate was increased using ferrioxamine supplements in preenrichment and selection media. The role of the ferrioxamine receptor FoxA in experimental salmonellosis was also examined.

Diversity of phage types among archived cultures of the Demerec collection of salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium strains

Article Abstract:

Thousands of salmonella enterica serovar that were sealed in agar for around forty years were used as a resource for mutational studies with typing systems developed to track epidemics from the source. Phage typing is often used to track salmonella epidemics worldwide whereas epidemiologic information obtained from phage typing is useful in gathering information to fight epidemics.

Fate of Salmonella enterica Serovar Typhimurium on carrots and radishes grown in fields treated with contaminated manure composts or irrigation water

Article Abstract:

The persistence of salmonella in soil, irrigation water and carrots and radishes grown in soils containing poultry manure compost, dairy cattle manure compost and alkaline-pH-stabilized dairy cattle manure compost is determined. A crucial role may be played by contaminated irrigation water and manure compost in contaminating vegetables and soil in which they grow.
