Variation in morphological traits of Drosophila melanogaster (fruit fly) under nutritional stress

Article Abstract:

Genetic and phenotypic change has been studied for five morphological traits of Drosophila melanogaster, that is fruit flies. Additive genetic variance was in general higher in poor feeding situations in all studied traits with the exception of sternopleural chaeta number. It appears that nutritional stress increases the expression of genetic variation for some traits and is like temperature stress in that respect.

Stress temperatures and quantitative variation in Drosophila melanogaster

Article Abstract:

Using isofemale line analysis, consequences of extreme rearing temperatures for genetic variation in qualitative characters in Drosophila melanogaster have been studied. Genetic variation appears to be greater in stressful environments and a possible underlying mechanism has been proposed. THe greater genetic variation for wing length and viability was higher at the low end of the temperature range.
