Hirsutellin A, a toxic protein produced in vitro by Hirsutella thompsonii

Article Abstract:

The mite fungal pathogen Hirsutella thompsonii produces a toxic protein hirsutellin A which is a monomere and has a molecular weight of 15 kDa and an isoelectric point of 10.5. Hirsutellin A contains a single copy of the peptide chain and a large amount of lysine, hydrophilic amino acids, aspartic acid, glutamic acid, glycine and alanine. It does not undergo glycosylation or show proteolytic activity and is unaffected by freezing and thawing, freeze-drying, trypsin, protease IV, proteinase K and dispase. It is lethal to the waxmoth and mosquito larvae.

Manipulation of intracellular glycerol and erythritol enhances germination of conidia at low water availability

Article Abstract:

Fungal pathogens require an environment of high humidity for conidia formation. When the humidity is low, the pathogens Beauveria bassiana, Metarhizum anisopliae and Paecilomyces farinosus can be induced to germinate into conidia when their intercellular concentration of glycerol and erythritol. Germinative capability, measured in terms of rate of conidia formation and mycelial growth, was thus observed well below the water requirements of these fungi.

Real-time monitoring of Bacillus subtilis endospore components by attenuated total reflection Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy during germination

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to analyze chemical changes of Bacillus subtilis spore components. Attenuated total Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy was utilized to carry out the analysis. Results indicated that changes in the germination mutant was very different from those in the first two strains, and that germination was slow and incomplete. Findings also showed that proteins remained unaltered throughout the course of the germination.
