Identification of an overexpressed yeast gene which prevents aminoglycoside toxicity

Article Abstract:

A novel yeast gene, isolated through a yeast model system, confers neomycin resistance to yeast transformants in high copy. The neomycin-resistance 1 (NEO1) gene encodes a potential cation transport ATPase. The N-terminus of Neo1p is partially homologous to abrin A-chain, another protein which interacts with cytoplasmic ribosomes. It is an example of a new member of a class of aminoglycoside-sensitivity genes which affect cellular processes aside from mitochondrial protein synthesis.

Metabolic flux response to salt-induced stress in the halotolerant yeast Debaryomyces hansenii

Article Abstract:

The toxic effect of NaCl and KCl on glucose and glycerol was investigated on the growth of the marine yeast Debaryomyces hansenii. The salts studied reduced the specific growth rate, specific glucose and glycerol respiration rates and specific glucose fermentation rate, as well as biomass yields of the yeast. Salt stress was found to likely produce a glycolytic flux deviation because of the intrinsic sensitivity of the glycolytic enzymes to intracellular ion concentrations.

Kluyveromyces marxianus flocculence and growth at high temperature is dependent on the presence of the protein p37

Article Abstract:

The flocculation behaviour, morphology, growth, calcofluor white sensitivity, and GAPDH activity of a Kluyveromyces marxianus mutant deficient in p37, a glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH)-like protein, has been considered. Mutant cells could not flocculate and were thermosensitive in YPD media, but the presence of calcium overcame the thermosensitivity. Results suggest the likelihood of p37 involvement in thermotolerance and flocculation.
