Improved enumeration of lactic acid bacteria in mesophilic dairy starter cultures by using multiplex quantitative real-time PCR and flow cytometry-fluorescence in situ hybridization

Article Abstract:

The multiplex quantitative PCR (qPCR) strategy was designed to quantify the target DNA simultaneously to total bacteria DNA. The methodology was compared with flow cytometric fluorescence in situ hybridization (FLOW-FISH) and 5-bromo-4-chloro-3-indolyl-beta-D-galactopyranoside (X-GAL)-calcium citrate agar-based plate counting. Quantitative real-time PCR and FLOW-FISH were found to be effective tools for the bacterial community analysis of complex starter cultures.

Manganese(IV) oxide production by Acremonium sp. strain KR21-2 and extracellular Mn(II) oxidase activity

Article Abstract:

Manganese(IV) oxide production by Acremonium sp. strain KR21-2 and extracellular Mn(II) oxidase activity of the sp. was studied. Results provide the first evidence that a fungal multicopper oxidase can convert Mn(II) to Mn(IV) oxide and also suggests that Acremonum sp strain KR21-2 is a good model for understanding the oxidation on Mn in diverse ascomycetes.
