In vitro survival and germination of Candida albicans in the presence of nitrogen compounds
Article Abstract:
Research was conducted to examine the in vitro effect of nitric oxide and nitrite on blastoconidia and hyphae of Candida Albicans using S-nitroso-N-acetylpenicillamine and sodium nitroprusside as NO donors. Another objective was to determine the effect of the NO on the germination process of the fungus. Results demonstrate that C. albicans blastoconidia are more sensitive than hyphae to NO and are susceptible to nitrite. Findings also reveal that NO enhances germination and is more efficient in acidic conditions.

Characterization of a haemolytic factor from Candida albicans
Article Abstract:
The culture supernatant of Candida albicans was observed to encourage the disruption of human red blood cells (RBCs). The hemolytic activity was found in a sugar-rich fraction from Sephacryl S-100 chromatography. The hemolytic factor may be a mannoprotein. The activity was halted by periodate oxidation, suggesting that the sugar moiety of the mannoprotein has a significant role in the hemolysis. The structure of the sugar moiety of the mannoprotein was determined to be a cell-wall mannan.

The two-component hybrid kinase regulator CaNIK1 of Candida albicans
Article Abstract:
Candida albicans is an opportunistic pathogen and can become systemic and invade tissues and organs in immunocompromised individuals. A two-component response regulator from C. albicans has been cloned using degenerate primers of two-component response regulators. It is found to be homologous to nik-1 of Neurospora crassa. CaNIK1 has a putative unorthodox second histidine kinase motif at the carboxy-terminal end.
