Interactions between streptococcus suis serotype 2 and different epithelial cell lines

Article Abstract:

Streptococcus serotype 2 adheres to epithelial cells through adhesins of the cell wall and causes cytotoxicity to epithelial cells of different cell lines through haemolysin. Results demonstrate that the bacterium follows a multistep infection process leading to bacteraemia and meningitis in pigs.

Characterization of Streptococcus suis capsular type 2 haemolysin

Article Abstract:

Affinity chromatography of the haemolysin toxin from Streptococcus suis type 2 using a thiopropyl Sepharose 6B column reveals that the extracellular protein has a molecular mass of 65 kDa. The haemolysin's response to oxygen and oxidizing agents, suppression by low levels of cholesterol, stimulation by reducing agents and transmembrane pore formation enable its classification into a family of antigenically related cholesterol-binding cytolytic toxins. S. suis haemolysin haemolytic activity is prevented by anti-streptolysin antibodies.

Streptococcus suis serotype 2 mutants deficient in capsular expression

Article Abstract:

Transposon mutagenesis with the self-conjugative transposon Tn916 was employed to obtain acapsular mutants from the virulent Streptococcus suis type 2 reference strain S735. Absence of capsule was proven by coagglutination, capillary precipitation and capsular reaction tests and by transmission electron microscopy. Absence of capsular polysaccharides correlated with a rise in hydrophobicity and phagocytosis by both murine macrophages and porcine monocytes compared to the wild-type strain. Findings indicated the importance of capsular polysaccharides as a virulence factor for S. suis type 2.
