Isolation and characterization of Haloanaerobacter chitinovorans gen. nov., sp. nov., a halophilic, anaerobic, chitinolytic bacterium from a solar saltern

Article Abstract:

Two strains of halophilic anaerobic bacteria, designated W5C8 and W3C1, were isolated from a solar saltern in Chula Vista, CA. Studies showed that the strains exhibited almost identical physiological and biochemical properties such as cell and colony morphology, optimum thermal and salinity levels for growth, sensitivites to antibiotic and substrate ranges. However, strain W5C8 degraded chitin as carbon source while W3C1 did not. Because the strains possessed properties which were different from other halophilic anaerobes, a new genus and species was proposed designated, Haloanaerobacter chitinovorans.

Fluorogenic selective and differential medium for isolation of Enterobacter sakazakii

Article Abstract:

The flurogenic substrate of alpha-glucosidase, 4-methylumbelliferyl-alpha-D-glucoside, is used as a selective marker to develop a differential medium for Enterobacter sakazakii, which shows strong fluorogenic characteristics clearly distinguishable from other microorganisms. An optimum basal medium and nitrogen were selected and the incubation conditions were optimized on the basis of reducing background noise.

Purification and characterization of a halocalkane dehalogenase of a new substrate class from a gamma-hexachlorocyclohexane-degrading bacterium, Sphingomonas paucimobilis UT26

Article Abstract:

Microbiological insecticide research indicates that the linB gene product 1,3,4,6-tetrachloro-1,4-cyclohexadiene halidohydrolase from the microorganism Sphingomonas paucimobilis UT26 is probably a haloalkane dehalogenase enzyme that is very like the haloalkane dehalogenase enzyme DhlA in structure. However, the monomeric enzyme utilizes a different range of substrate materials. It has an optical pH of 8.2.
