Life and cancer without telomerase

Article Abstract:

Regulation of telomere length as believed to be capable of aging and developing tumors in humans. Organisms such as Drosophila, yeast and mice were studied to prove this theory. Drosophila chromosomes functioned normally even with shortened telomeric DNA, while chromosomes in yeast organisms deteriorated quickly. However, mice cells demonstrate slow shortening of telomeric DNA for mice cells possess long telomeres. Cell division in humans causes telomere shortening and regulating its length could possibly control the development of cancer.

For better or worse? Telomerase inhibition and cancer

Article Abstract:

Various experiments on telomerase inhibitors have yielded conflicting results. Some studies with telomerase-deficient mice indicate that the absence of telomerase can inhibit the development of tumor. However, other results in the same system suggest that antitelomerase drugs could have an inverse effect and promote oncogenic transformation in certain circumstances. The absence of concrete findings implies further studies are needed before telomerase inhibitors can be used in human tumor cells.

Evidence for a new step in telomere maintenance

Article Abstract:

Research indicates that molecular elements similar to the telomere enzyme is necessary for maintaining telomere integrity. These molecular elements are capable of forming telomere to telomere connections for TG (telomere generated guanine) tails. This binding of telomeres would result in the formation of single stranded TG tails at the final stages of the S phase. Data also suggest that the cell-controlled deterioration of the cytosine-adenine strand provides a medium for telomere maintenance.
