Lipid A acylation and bacterial resistance against vertebrate antimocrobial peptides

Article Abstract:

Activation of PhoP-PhoQ on limitation of Mg(super2+) or Ca(super2+) induces Salmonella spp. cationic antimicrobial peptides (CAMP) resistance. The PhoP-PhoQ activated gene, pagP is important to inducible CAMP resistance and increased lipid A acylation. PagP mutants showed increased outer membrane permeability, when responding to CAMP. Compounds inhibiting the ability to increase acylation of lipid A may have use as new antimicrobial agents.

Virus-induced Abl and Fyn kinase signals permit coxsackievirus entry through epithelial tight junctions

Article Abstract:

Virus attachment to decay-accelerating factor (DAF) on the apical cell surface activates Abl kinase, triggering Racdependent actin rearrangements that permit virus movement to the tight junction are reported. Interaction with DAF also activates Fyn kinase, an event that is required for the phosphorylation of caveolin and transport of virus into the cell within caveolar vesicles.

Recognition of antimicrobial peptides by a bacterial sensor kinase

Article Abstract:

The direct activation of enzymatic activity of Salmonella typhimurium PhoQ by antimicrobial peptides is discussed. A molecular mechanism is revealed for initiation of a transcriptional program to promote bacterial virulence.
