Male-female conflict and genitalia: failure to confirm predictions in insects and spiders

Article Abstract:

The massive but hitherto under-utilized taxonomic literature on genitalic evolution is used to test, in a two-step process, whether such new models of arms races between males and females is responsible for rapid divergent evolution of male genitalia. It was found that by eliminating, alternative interpretations, such as traditional female choice, which do not predict associations between female protection from harassment and rapid divergent evolution, are strengthened.

Adaptive explanation in socio-ecology: Lessons from the Equidae

Article Abstract:

There are major variations in the social and spatial organization of animals and such variations are a challenge to sociobiologists. The social and spatial organization within and between feral horse populations are compared, and the socio-ecological explanations for the differences are reviewed. These explanations are not supported across their geographical range.

Costs of sexual traits: a mismatch between theoretical considerations and empirical evidence

Article Abstract:

Research into the theory of sexual selection in animals is presented. The concept of the cost of sexual traits for the trait bearer is analysed but the paper argues that there is little empirical evidence for this view.
