Mammalian cells cycle without the D-type cyclin-dependent kinases Cdk4 and Cdk6

Article Abstract:

Studies done to analyze the physiological roles of Cdk4 and Cdk6 in vivo as well as to dissect their specific contributions to cell cycle progression after mitogenic stimuli by generating mice defective for Cdk6 as well as double mutant mice lacking both Cdk4 and Cdk6 is reported. Results reveal that D-type cyclin-dependent kinases are not important for cell cycle progression and suggest the existence of alternative mechanisms to initiate cell proliferation upon mitogenic stimulation.

NIPA defines an SCF-type mammalian E3 ligase that regulates mitotic entry

Article Abstract:

The NIPA (nuclear interaction partner of ALK) is identified as a human F-box-containing protein that defines an SCF-type E3 ligase (SCF[super NIPA]) controlling mitotic entry. Assembly of this SCF complex is found to be regulated by cell-cycle-dependent phosphorylation of NIPA, which restricts substrate ubiquitination activity to interphase.

Pursuing cardiac progenitors: Regeneration redux

Article Abstract:

The regenerative capacity of the heart following injury is debated. It is argued that the physiologic role and therapeutic potential of cardiac resident progenitor cells remain unclear.
