Microbiological and molecular impacts of AbiK on the lytic cycle of Lactococcus lactis phages of the 936 and P335 species

Phenotypic and genetic characterization of the bacteriophage abortive infection mechanism AbiK from Lactococcus lactis

Article Abstract:

The 10th abortive infection mechanism from Lactococcus lactis was isolated and characterized. Deletion mutants revealed that only orf1 was required to produce the Abi phenotype. orf1 (renamed abiK) coded for a predicted protein of 599 amino acids (AbiK) with an estimated molecular size of 71.4 kDa and a pI of 7.98. DNA and protein sequence alignment programs revealed no significant homology with databases. However, a database query based on amino acid composition indicated that AbiK may be in the same protein family as AbiA.

AbiQ, an abortive infection mechanism from Lactococcus lactis

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to characterize a novel abortive-infection protein (Abi) from Lactococcus lactis and to analyze the impact of the Abi on the lytic cycle of the phage groups. Escherichia coli was determined at 37 degrees C in Luria broth while L. lactis was grown at 30 degrees C in an M17 solution supporting 0.5% glucose. Conventional analyses on DNA and putative proteins from the nucleic acid sequence were carried out using the Genetics Computer Group sequence analysis computer software.
