Genetic variation among endosymbionts of widely distributed vestimentiferan tubeworms

Article Abstract:

Results demonstrate that the endosymbionts display unique repetitive-extragenic-palindrome polymerase chain reaction patterns. Fingerprints data reveal a relationship among the symbionts governing host genera and geographic location.

Bacterial symbiont transmission in the wood-boring shipworm Bankia setacea (Bivalvia: Teredinidae)

Article Abstract:

The wood-boring shipworm Bankia setacea appears to transmit symbiotic bacteria from parent to offspring. Researchers used 16S rRNA-directed probes for the bacterium and found bacterial rDNA in host gill, gonad tissue, and recently spawned eggs.

Modified serial analysis of gene expression method for construction of gene expression profiles of microbial eukaryotic species

Article Abstract:

A novel approach for the construction of serial analysis of gene expression (SAGE) libraries from small quantities of total RNA by using Y linkers to selectively amplify 3' cDNA fragments is reported. The modified SAGE method produces gene expression profiles that appear to be both comprehensive and quantitative, and it is directly applicable to the study of gene expression in other environmentally relevant microbial species.
