Molecular and cytogenetic characterization of highly repeated DNA sequences in the vole Microtus cabrerae

Article Abstract:

Cytogenetic and molecular characterization has been undertaken in highly repeated DNA sequences in Microtus cabrerae, a vole with large heterochromatic blocks on the giant sex chromosomes. Results support the hypothesis that heterochromatic blocks from the sex chromosomes of different species are evolving independently and likely have genetic capacity to amplify/retain different satellite DNAs. A model to explain the origin of a length polymorphism already described for the Y chromosome of the organism is proposed.

A model of the evolution of the unusual sex chromosome system of Microtus oregoni

Article Abstract:

Evolution of the unusual Microtus oregoni, creeping vole, sex chromosome system is discussed. Inbreeding cuts down any advantage to X'. The reproductive value of males is helped by production of inviable Y0 embryos in X0 x X/Y matings. That value can be greater than any advantage to X'.

Low mitochondrial variability in birds may indicate Hill-Robertson effects on the W chromosome

Article Abstract:

A study shows that mitochondrial DNA sequence diversity is reduced in non-ratite birds compared with mammals. It concludes that Hill-Robertson effects linked with the W chromosome give the explanation for this difference.
