Molecular epidemiology of echoviruses 11 and 13, based on an environmental surveillance conducted in Toyama Prefecture, 2002-2003

Article Abstract:

Echovirus 11 (E11) and E13 isolates collected in an environmental surveillance conducted in Toyoma Prefecture from April 2002 to March 2003 were phylogenetically analyzed and their genetic sequences were compared to available clinical isolates. The nucleotide sequences of E13 isolates were identified to be similar to the enterovirus that caused the outbreak of aseptic meningitis in 2000. Results suggest that the combination of both virus isolation from environmental sources and phylogenetic analysis could be complementary assessment approaches to trace prevalent and minor circulating enteroviruses in the human population.

Phylogenetic compositions of bacterioplankton from two California estuaries compared by denaturaing gradient gel electrophoresis of 16S rDNA fragments

Article Abstract:

Comparison of the PCR-amplified rRNA phylotype profiles of the bacterioplankton samples taken from San Francisco Bay and Tomales Bay, CA, shows a significant phylogenetic variation in the bacterioplankton composition. This validates the observed differences in the metabolic abilities of the bacterioplankton in the two estuaries. The phylotype profiles were prepared by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis.

Chitinase gene sequences retrieved from diverse aquatic habitats reveal environment-specific distributions

Article Abstract:

A degenerate PCR primer set to amplify a ~900-bp fragment of family 18, group I chitinase genes is developed and is used to retrieve these genes fragments from environmental samples. Identical sequences are retrieved from samples collected at widely distributed locations that do not necessarily represent similar environments, suggesting homogeneity of chitinoclastic communities between some environments.
