Mother cell-specific HO expression in budding yeast depends on the unconventional Myosin Myo4p and other cytoplasmic proteins

Article Abstract:

A haploid yeast cell buds off to produce a daughter cell lacking the ability to express the gene HO endonuclease. This gene confers the ability to switch mating types, and is expressed only when the cell has already undergone budding. Another set of genes, termed SHE 1-5, have been implicated in transferring the factors that repress HO expression from mother to daughter cells. Products of these genes are similar in structure to minimyosin, which accumulate in the daughter cell to signal the production of the HO repressor, ASH1p.

Disjunction of homologous chromosomes in meiosis I depends on proteolytic cleavage of the meiotic cohesin Rec8 by separin

Article Abstract:

Cleavage of Rec8 by separin at one of two sites has been found to be necessary for the resolution of chiasmata and the disjunction of homologous chromosomes in meiosis. Noncleavable mutations were generated in Rec8's potential separin cleavage sites. Both sites were seen to be substrates for separin in vitro and in vivo.

Phosphorylation of the cohesin subunit Scc1 by Polo/Cdc5 kinase regulates sister chromatid separation in yeast

Article Abstract:

Research has been conducted on the cohesin subunit Scc1 cleaved by the caspase-related protease. Results indicate that Polo/Cdc5 kinase phosphorylates adjacent to the Scc1 cleavage sites serine residues and that this phosphorylation regulates sister chromatid separation.
