Olfactory receptors, vomeronasal receptors, and the organization of olfactory information

Article Abstract:

The mammalian olfactory system employs as much as 1,000 G protein-coupled receptors for the identification of odorants. Previous studies, however, have failed to devote adequate attention to the vomeronasal organ in the nasal septum, an olfactory organ with an independent group of receptor proteins. A third distinct class of mammalian olfactory receptors have been cloned. Results show the basic components for expressing olfactory pathways.

The synaptic guidepost protein SYG-2 and its receptor, SYG-1, generate synaptic specificity

Article Abstract:

Synapse formation is characterized by pinpoint precision and synaptic connections in the nervous system are directed onto specific cellular as well as sub cellular targets. Studies show that the transmembrane immunoglobulin super family protein SYG-2 is a central component of the synaptic guidepost signal and local interactions between immunoglobulin superfamily proteins determine specificity during synapse formation.

She2p is a novel RNA binding protein with a basic helical hairpin motif

Article Abstract:

X-ray crystallography is used to determine the three-dimensional structure of She2p, which reveals that She2p is composed of a single globular domain with a five alpha helix bundle that forms a symmetric homodimer. After demonstrating potent, dimer-dependent RNA binding in vitro, the RNA binding surface of She2p is mapped to a basic helical hairpin in vitro and in vivo.
