PAGE analysis of the heteroduplexes formed between PCR-amplified 16S rRNA genes: estimation of sequence similarity and rDNA complexity

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to test whether the heteroduplex formation by amplified 16S rDNA can effectively evaluate 16S rDNA similarities associated with bacterial isolates. DNA was determined from various strains, including Staphylococcus xylosus ATCC 29971, S. epidermidis ATCC 14990 and S. saprophyticus ATCC 15305. Results indicated that 16S rDNA sequence similarities can be determined by the electrophoretic migration of the heteroduplexes in polyacrylamide gels.

Phylogenetic analysis of the ballistosporous anamorphic genera Udeniomyces and Bullera, and related basidiomycetous yeasts, based on 18S rDNA sequence

Article Abstract:

The use of phylogenetic analysis shows that 44 species of basidiomycetes are divided into 12 species and three major lineages, and the ballistosporous yeast genera Udeniomyces and Bullera are separate. The phylogenetic analysis used the 18S ribosomal DNA sequences to compare them with the published sequences for 36 other fungal species. Analysis of the sequences shows that the Bullera species may be heterogenetic at the generic level.

A new chlamydia-like 16S rDNA sequence from a clinical sample

Article Abstract:

The article reports on the detection of a 16S ribosomal DNA sequence of the parachlamydiae from a human respiratory sample. Data point out to the possibility of infection of humans by new chlamydia-like organisms.
