Proteinaceous factor(s) in culture supernatant fluids of bifidobacteria which prevents the binding of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli to gangliotetraosylceramide

Article Abstract:

Supernatant fluids of bifidobacteria produces proteinaceous factors that prevent the binding of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) strains with gangliotetraosylceramide (asialo GM1 or GA1). The ETEC cells are less effective in blocking the binding of Bifidobacterium cells to GA1. This suggests that the two bacterial species identify different binding sites on the GA1 molecule. The proteinaceous factor has anti-infectious activities and a neutral isoelectric point.

Purification and characterization of conjugated bile salt hydrolase from Bifidobacterium longum BB536

Article Abstract:

The bifidobacterial response to bile salts is studied. The conjugated bile salt hydrolase (BSH) obtained from Bifidobacterium longum BB536 is purified, and during denaturing polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis its apparent molecular mass is ca. 40000 Da. The hexamer BSH from B. longum BB536 resides in the intracellular space. There is no considerable difference between the initial deconjugation rate and enzymatic efficiency in bile salts for B. longum.
