Rat sperm plasma membrane mannosidase: localization and evidence for proteolytic processing during epididymal maturation

Article Abstract:

A study of the molecular mechanisms and reasons for the apparent increase in enzyme activity during sperm maturation in rats using affinity-purified, monospecific anti-mannosidase IgG reveals that the transformation of high molecular weight precursor forms of the enzyme that are inactive or less active into enzymatically active mature form during sperm maturation leads to the increase. The immunoglobin is used on plasma membrane fractions from the testis and spermatozoa from cauda, corpus and caput regions of the epididymis, and Western blot analysis reveals that the sperm from each of the three regions exhibit a characteristic immunoreactive band.

Skin abnormalities in mice transgenic for plasminogen activator inhibitor 1: implications for the regulation of desquamation and follicular neogenesis by plasminogen activator enzymes

Article Abstract:

A study conducted on human epidermal plasminogen activator inhibitor (PAI-1) expression in epidermal physiology by using in situ hybridization, immunocytochemistry, and in situ reverse zymography techniques showed plasminogen activator involvement in the regulation of epidermal shedding and follicular neogenesis. The dermatopathologies associated with overexpression of PAI-1 in the skin of neonatal trangenic mice points to the potential role of plasminogen activators in normal epidermal physiology.

Involvement of the plasminogen activator/plasmin proteolytic cascade in fertilization

Article Abstract:

Plasminogen exists in the fertilization environment and can be especially bound by spermatozoa and eggs. The in vitro fertilization of mouse eggs is impeded by antibodies which prevent the catalytic activity of plasmin. Data from two in vitro fertilization protocols shows that the addition of plasminogen to the fertilization medium enhances the yield of fertilized eggs.
