Repetitive DNA elements as mediators of genomic change in response to environmental cues

Article Abstract:

Repetitive DNA elements, including transposons and microsatellites, play a major role in the structure and expression of protein-coding genes and are responsive to environmental signals in some cases. The studies of transgenerational effects of repetitive element (RE) mutations are confined to systems where mutation has detrimental effects on fitness and they have identified changes in gene methylation as a mechanism for transmission of acquired mutations.

Confounding factors in the detection of species responses to habitat fragmentation

Article Abstract:

The extensive literature on species responses to habitat fragmentation is reviewed and the numerous ways in which confounding factors have either masked the detection, or prevented the manifestation, of predicted fragmentation effects are discussed. It is emphasized that anthropogenic fragmentation is a new phenomenon in evolutionary time and it is suggested that the final-long-term impacts of habitat fragmentation may not yet have shown themselves.

Life in the puddle: behavioural and life-cycle adaptations in the Diptera of tropical rain pools

Article Abstract:

Research into the behaviour and life-cycles of Diptera inhabiting rock pools in Southern Malawi is presented. The paper examines the adaptation of the fly's life cycle to the temporary and unpredictable nature of the pools.
