Inhibitor of striate conditionally suppresses cell proliferation in variegated maize

Article Abstract:

Inhibitor of striate (Isr), long recognized as a dose-dependent genetic modifier of variegation in chlorotic leaf striping mutants of maize such as striate2, has been found to conditionally suppress cell proliferation in variegated maize. It is proposed that the action of Isr in nuclear and plastid communication might be triggered by carbon stress. Isr protein seems to encode a chloroplast protein with a sequence like that of a family of bacterial phosphatases with a role in carbon catabolite repression or in carbon metabolism.

Robertson's Mutator transposons in A. thaliana are regulated by the chromatin-remodeling gene Decrease in DNA Methylation (DDM1)

Article Abstract:

Robertson's Mutator transposons in Arabidopsis thaliana have been found to be regulated by Decrease in DNA Methylation (DDM1), the chromatin-remodeling gene. Gene silencing and paramutation are regulated by DDM1. That supports the idea that epigenetic silencing is involved in transposon regulation.

Dorsoventral patterning in plants

Article Abstract:

The knowledge that dorsoventral patterning in plants is affected by mutations has long been part of the body of information available to developmental biologists, but underlying mechanisms have not been well understood. Recent papers have given information in this area and with large numbers of mutants and asymmetrically expressed markers available much progress can be expected. Adaxial-abaxial patterning in plants will likely soon be better understood. Isolation and characterization of genes have been helpful. The most information relative to dorsoventral patterning of appendages has been accumulated on the developing Drosophila wing. Much similarity exists between developmental mechanisms for leaves and wings. Importance of the shoot apical meristem (SAM) sending signals to newly stated primordia on the flanks was implicated by early, classical work. The available body of knowledge is reviewed and topics discussed include asymmetrically expressed factors, YABBY genes and promotion of abaxial cell fate, and mutants waiting to be cloned.
