Signal peptide-dependent protein transport in Bacillus subtilis: a genome-based survey of the secretome

Article Abstract:

Four protein export pathways governing the export of about 300 proteins from Bacillus subtilis are described. Most exported proteins follow the Sec pathway, whereas the remaining three pathways are special-purpose pathways.

Proteomics of protein in secretion by bacillus subtilis: separating the "secrets" of the secretome

Article Abstract:

Secretory proteins perform a variety of important 'remote-control' functions for bacterial survival in the environment. The study concludes that proteomics has yielded a variety of novel leads for the analysis of protein traffic in B.subtilis and other gram-positive bacteria.

The signal peptidase II (Isp) gene of Bacillus subtilis

Article Abstract:

The isolation and characterization of the Isp (Bsu) gene of Bacillus subtilis 168 was reported. The amino acid sequence of signal peptidase (SPase) II was compared with type II SPases. Amino acid sequence of B. subtilis SPase II was similar to those of other known SPase II enzymes. A pulse-labelling experiment in Escherichia coli demonstrated the activity of B. subtilis SPase II. Isp gene appeared to be the first gene in an operon from recent studies of Gram-positive bacteria.
